Chemical Composition: Silicon dioxide (SiO2) with trace amounts of iron, which gives it its purple color.

Hardness on Mohs Scale: 7 Mohs Hardness

Color Varieties: Light and Deep Purple, Pink, Ametrine (Citrine/Purple Amethyst), Bi-Color, Chevron (Purple with white V-shaped bands) and Smoky (Smoky gray or brown tint from natural irradiation).  

Localities: Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia, Russia, South Korea, Canada, and the United States (Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, and North Carolina)
